Daddy Daughter Day: The Story of Thanksgiving

Today I bring you a Thanksgiving installment of Daddy Daughter Day. Today's book is The Story of Thanksgiving by Nancy J. Skarmeas, illustrated by Stacy Venturi-Pickett.

This book gives the young listener a simplified version of the Pilgrims coming to America and their encounters with the Native Americans. Now, I realize that some of the points made in the book are debatable, or at the very least, up to interpretation. Keep in mind the intended audience for this book. I think the book does a good job of explaining the meaning behind Thanksgiving to a young audience. It also talks about the types of food available at that first feast, many of which are still on our tables today.

We have several books similar to this one and have found that reading them for a few weeks prior to the holiday or event provides some added learning as well as building interest and enthusiasm. I love reading to my daughter and strongly encourage anyone who is around young children to take a few moments and read to them.
