In Remembrance of David Eddings

I am ashamed to say that I missed the news of David Eddings' passing back on June 2, 2009. I saw the news posted on a blog and was overwhelmed with sadness. Not everyone was a fan of his work, but it has a special place in my heart and always will.

Eddings was most known for his Belgariad and Malloreon series. The entire series spans thirteen books, with two being prequels to the series and one being a collection of ancient texts referenced throughout the series. The series is the perfect example of high fantasy. You follow the maturing of young Garion as he becomes a sorcerer, husband, ruler and father.

I believe that the secret to his success was his characters. He was able to create rich, lovable characters. That's not to say that there was no plot in his books. I just think that some of the characters would be successful even if thrown into different circumstances. I really cared what happened to them, both good and bad.

David Eddings was 77 years old at his passing. He was living in Carson, Nevada where he was working on a new project that remains unfinished. This incomplete manuscript as well as his other works will be left to his alma mater, Reed College.

I will truly miss this author. His books touched me; I cried, I laughed, I cheered. Good Bye.
