October Stephen King Tribute Day 20: Insomnia

Insomnia was originally published in October of 1994.

Warning, this review does contain spoilers.

Retired widower, Ralph Roberts is suffering from insomnia. As a result of his condition, he begins seeing colored auras around people as well as seeing beings he refers to as the "bald doctors".Ralph learns that his friend Lois can also see the auras and the doctors. Together, they name the two good doctors Clotho and Lachesis while naming the bad doctor Atropos, all being a tribute to the fates of Greek mythology.

Ralph and Lois learn that they are part of a plot to take down Atropos and the Crimson King. Ralph gets the better of Atropos and forces him to leave them alone, but not before Atropos shows him a glimpse of the future where innocent Natalie Deepneau is killed. Ralph makes an agreement to trade his life for hers.

Ralph's former neighbor, Ed Deepneau, goes a bit crazy and attempts to fly a plane filled with explosives into the Derry Civic Center. Ralph learns that Ed is being controlled by the Crimson King and is attempting to kill Patrick Danville. Ed's plane is forced to crash into the parking lot, saving many lives.

The story ends with Ralph being killed by a car to uphold his end of the agreement to trade his life for Natalie's.

The above description probably does not do this novel justice. I loved the fact that the main characters were all older and were able to still make a difference. Some think the novel is a little tedious to read, but I loved the charm and back stories of the earlier parts.

There is plenty of action at the end. This book is a major tie in to the Dark Tower Series. The story also takes place in Derry, which was the setting for King's novel It.
