Warning, the following review does contain spoilers, just in case you have not read it yet.
The small Nevada mining town of Desperation has a big problem with one of it's policemen. Deputy Entragian has been possessed by an ancient being named Tak. Tak had been sealed in an abandoned mine shaft until accidentally released when a mining company was working in that area. Now Entragian is capturing people traveling the highway and locking them in the jail.
David Carver, one of Entragian's captives, is able to receive guidance from God. With his help, the captives escape. Their first urge is to leave Desperation as quickly as possible. David convinces them to stay and seal Tak back in the mine shaft.
This novel has many religious themes throughout. David is able to commune with God and even perform miracles such as multiplying small amount of food to feed the group. Tak is representative of hell and demons, a concerted evil to oppose God. I enjoy King's common theme of bringing together various people to form a group to fight evil.
For all of the die hard Stephen King fans, there are several references to his other works including It, The Stand, The Tommyknockers, Rose Madder and Misery.
