October Stephen King Tribute Day 8: Dolan's Cadillac

Dolan's Cadillac is a short story included in the collection Nightmares and Dreamscapes, originally published in 1993.

Warning, this review does contain spoilers.

Dolan's Cadillac is a simple story of revenge. The narrator's wife was killed by Dolan, a crime boss, to prevent her from testifying against him in court. She was killed with a bomb attached to her vehicle. Our narrator bides his time waiting for the right moment.

The narrator learns that Dolan makes a cross country trip regularly in his Cadillac. He devises an elaborate trap for Dolan. He digs a pit just large enough for the Cadillac. His trap works and the Cadillac falls into the hole. One of Dolan's henchmen is killed in the crash, the other our narrator kills to silence his screaming. Dolan pleads and offers money to save his life. But our narrator buries Dolan and his Cadillac under the roadway.

This may be a short story, but do not discount the impact. It is pretty powerful stuff to plot out a revenge of this caliber.
